H-E-B Launches Initiative to Encourage Commuters to Go Green Print E-mail

H-E-B today announced a unique partnership with NuRide, Inc. to reward commuters in Houston with valuable discounts on H-E-B groceries when they choose a greener commute by either carpooling, vanpooling, biking, walking, telecommuting or taking public transportation.

The H-E-B 15,000,000 Mile Commuter Challenge will officially kick off on Friday, March 27 during the 2009 Fresh Air Friday: A Picnic on the Plaza at Jones Plaza in downtown Houston. To participate in the challenge Houston residents can register at HEBCommuterChallenge.com, where participants earn points for every carpool, vanpool, bike, walk, telecommute or public transportation trip recorded. Points can be redeemed for rewards and special offers from local and national sponsors. H-E-B is providing coupons for $5 off of $50 purchases, as well as a grand prize of one year of free groceries.

“H-E-B has long been committed to working families throughout the communities we serve,” said Winell Herron, H-E-B group vice president of public affairs, diversity and environmental affairs, “and we are proud to partner with NuRide to help families reduce their commuting costs and improve the environment while earning valuable discounts on their groceries.”

“We are extremely excited to partner with H-E-B to help commuters in Houston,” said NuRide CEO Rick Steele, “and H-E-B’s support during this difficult economic time will help NuRide members stretch their grocery dollars even further while also improving air quality in Houston.”

The H-E-B 15,000,000 Mile Commuter Challenge is being managed by NuRide, Inc., the nation’s largest commuter rewards program. The goal is to reduce commuter miles by 15,000,000 miles throughout Houston and reduce emissions by over 6000 tons.
